Craft Across Genres

Craft Across Genres

Cost
650.00

This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Writer’s Studio curriculum.

This course is designed for individuals who want to develop their writing skills across genres, with an examination of how particular techniques, in varied texts, can offer new ways of thinking about writing. Over the course of eight weeks, participants will read both fiction and nonfiction works, and focus discussion around the ways each employs a specific element of craft, including point of view, setting, character, and use of objects as symbols. Each week, in addition to studying work by writers from disparate backgrounds, time periods, and genres, participants will respond to a craft-specific prompt and have the opportunity to receive feedback on their own writing.

This course is taught by Amanda Parrish Morgan, an instructor at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. Morgan is the author of Stroller, which The New Yorker named one of the best books of 2022. Morgan’s writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Wired, LitHub, The American Scholar, and The Washington Post.
