Exploring European Maps of the Early Modern Era

Cost
335.00

This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Open Enrollment curriculum.

Today, Google and Apple Maps get us from Point A to Point B, but medieval and Renaissance maps serve a much broader range of functions, acting as endlessly fascinating windows into early modern culture—and offering insights into the cartographers who made them. In this course we will learn about three principal types of medieval maps; how early modern European maps were commissioned; and the sources, textual and pictorial, cartographers used while creating. No previous experience with maps is necessary.
