Basic Program students learn how to read texts closely, carefully, and systematically. Many of these texts are by ancient Greeks. Reading is also a good name for looking at ancient Greek material culture as well, especially the art, which is very often narrative, but also the architecture. As it happens, the architecture, too, is sometimes narrative, but it is always communicational. In this course, students will learn to apply their skills of close reading to ancient Greek art and architecture, using a textbook notable for both the level and quality of its illustrations, as well as its continuous just-in-time social history. The instructor will draw connections where appropriate with the four-year Basic Program curriculum, but the course is open to all students, and no knowledge of the Basic Program curriculum is presupposed. Students will emerge from this class able to regard a work of ancient Greek art or a building in its historical context and on its own terms.
