Finance Program Instructors

Leaders from the greater Chicagoland area financial sector are fully engaged instructors in the Financial Decision Making certificate program at the University of Chicago Graham School. Our instructors’ extensive experience and long tenures across all segments of Chicago’s finance industry inform a comprehensive, program-long discussion of finance theories and practical applications. Students engage in conversations and learning activities relevant to banking, accounting, financial planning, reporting, investment portfolio analysis, and both micro and macro economics.

Our instructors impart their expertise regarding both the pressure and growth of careers in finance, and they also advise you on accelerating your professional development through exposure to the Chicagoland area’s financial talent network.

David Ellis, MBA, is former Assistant Treasurer of the former Sara Lee Corporation.  During his long tenure at Sara Lee, he was involved with research and decisions related to cash management, credit management, risk management, acquisitions, capital markets, and foreign exchange.  Mr. Ellis holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Ira Goldberg, PhD, is a Senior Finance/Economic Strategist for Finance and Administration at the Argonne National Laboratory. He earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and his PhD in economics at Southern Illinois University.
Charles Hamilton, PhD, CPA, is a Certified Public Accountant and experienced teacher of accounting. He holds a PhD in accounting from the University of Illinois.
Patrick Keating, MBA, is an independent investor and investment manager and former Senior Portfolio Manager at the Harris Bank. He earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Robert McDonald, MBA, is a leading figure in Chicago's business community. He has enjoyed a distinguished career in finance, culminating in a 5-year tenure as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Commonwealth Edison Corporation. He earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Charles Sloan, CPA, CFA, MBA, is Executive Vice President of Bufka & Rodgers, part of Mid-Continent Capital, LLC, a registered investment management firm. Mr. Sloan earned his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and he is both a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst.
William Strauss, MA, is senior economist and economic advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and a Past President of the Chicago Association of Business Economists. Mr. Strauss holds an MA in economics from Northwestern University. Strauss received the 2010 Graham School Excellence in Teaching Award.
John Twombly, PhD, MBA, CPA, holds MBA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and he is a Certified Public Accountant. He has taught accounting and finance at Northwestern University and the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School.
