Our Certificate in Medical Writing and Editing is designed to teach students the fundamentals and best practices of crisp, clear, and sophisticated medical writing and editing.
About the Program
The certificate offers a mix of courses focused on writing and editing taught by experienced, expert instructors working in the medical publishing field.
Classes are offered in two formats, online or face-to-face. Students may take all online courses or a combination of online and face-to-face courses.
Face-to-face courses are offered in a convenient three-day format at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center in downtown Chicago.
Online courses are three to five weeks long, with live classroom sessions once a week. Between the weekly synchronous sessions, participants complete required readings, assignments, and self-study activities. All participants' equipment and software must meet minimal technical standards for online learning
Students must take 4 courses to receive a certificate.
Students should hold a BA and have an interest in contributing to medical publishing.
Students may take up to 1 course (as long as it has no pre-requisites) without applying to the program. An application must be on file before students register for a second course.

- Statement of purpose (250 words) describing why you wish to enroll in the certificate and how this course of study will help you to advance your career goals. Be as specific as possible.
- Current resume
- $40 application fee
Members of related professional associations such as the American Medical Writers Association, Council of Science Editors, National Association of Science Writers, International Society of Managing and Technical Editors, Editorial Freelancers Association, and Independent Writers of Chicago as well as BELS certified editors qualify for a 10% discount when able to provide proof of current, valid membership. - Technical Requirements
At a minimum, you will need the following hardware and software to participate in the Graham School’s online programs:
- Access to a modern computer
- Reliable high-speed Internet access via cable, Ethernet, or WiFi
- A recent version of a reliable internet browser
- An email account and service that is dependable and easily accessible at various times of the day
- A basic microphone for participation in group discussions
- A sound card and speakers for participation in group discussions
View the system and software requirements in greater detail. If your computer is less than two years old and you are running the internet with a high-speed connection, you should have no trouble using the learning management system or downloading the software you need to participate.
