This course was available in the past and may be presented again as part of the Basic Program of Liberal Education curriculum.

John Donne—great metaphysical poet, learned lawyer, and distinguished Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral—was a man of crashing intellect and passion. From the seduction, bravado, and humor of poems like "The Flea," "The Sun Rising," and "Elegy: To His Mistress Going to Bed" to the fiery intensity of the Holy Sonnets, Donne proves himself a multifaceted and profoundly imaginative literary force. Through reading Donne’s poems and select passages from Donne Sermons and Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, we will explore the shapeliness and exactitude of Donne’s conceit-constructing wit and expressive power.
