Making Career Development Accessible for Certificate Students and Alumni

Access Career Development

Career development is what makes the Graham School’s certificates unique, and creating career opportunities has been a major focus for our team over the past three years. We have combined this focus with an increasing number of ways for our certificate students and alumni to engage with us. In autumn 2016, we created various cocurricular activities and professional development opportunities outside the classroom, including webinars, seminars, alumni panels, career treks, and more. We have continued to offer this type of programming over the past two years, while also expanding to include career advising.

Students can meet with career advisors at any point throughout the completion of their certificate and long after. Lisa Malvin, assistant director for Professional Development Certificates, and Jo Cai, assistant director for Graduate Career Development at UChicago Grad, offer weekly office hours for students and alumni to discuss their resumes or cover letters, plan a job search, conduct a mock interview, or discuss ideas for networking. Students who are interested in setting up an advising session can contact Lisa directly.

This year, students and alumni also have access to the Professional Development Career Resource Site. Housed in Canvas, this site includes recordings of our career presentations (and those that are specific to each certificate), career outlooks by industry, salary guides, curriculum maps, and much more! It will be updated every quarter to include new recordings and feedback from instructors. Students and alumni must opt-in to access the site, and they can do so here.

As a professional development hub, the certificates strive to provide high-quality, career-focused programming.
