A Master of Science in Threat and Response Management alumna talks about her role in responding to the 2010 Haiti earthquake. She explains that understanding the context and landscape where a disaster has occurred is essential for an effective response.
“I looked into all the various continuing education programs around Chicago, from the community colleges to the major universities. There was no question the Graham School at the University of Chicago was the place I wanted to go. Whereas continuing studies programs at most other universities cater to professionals unpracticed in academic work, the University of Chicago encourages immersion and intense exploration regardless of the student’s background."
Celebrating the publication of Rust Belt Chicago: An Anthology, a collection of writings by contemporary Chicago authors published by Belt Publishing, the Graham School’s Writer’s Studio brought together six authors on December 7 who read excerpts from their Chicago-focused work before a full house at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center.
“I love bringing art to people,” says Ariela Lazar, PhD, whose Graham School courses How to View Art I and How to View Art II: Modern Art will be offered as part of the Winter 2018 liberal arts curriculum. “It’s a passion of mine. This is why I developed these courses with the goal of giving each person the skill set to view art in an intelligent and informed way.”
In the end, it’s the teaching and vigorous classroom debate that has Joe excited to return for his second quarter at the Graham School. While he always enjoyed teaching undergraduates, he admits that it was a pleasure occasionally diminished by their focus on grades and concern for their teacher’s good opinion. In that regard, Joe says his experience teaching adult professionals has been both refreshing and eye-opening.
