First Friday Lecture: Songs in Shakespeare

Cultural Center 2

Shakespeare's play-texts are punctuated with beautiful song-lyrics, too often cut from modern productions. What can attention to Shakespeare's songs add to our understanding of his plays? Examples may be drawn from Love's Labour's Lost, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Henry IV, Part One, Othello, Hamlet, and The Tempest.

Presented by:

Nicholas Bellinson studied Early Modern intellectual history at Princeton University, then Renaissance art history at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and is now preparing a dissertation at the University of Chicago on Shakespeare's songs, under the auspices of the Committee on Social Thought.
