When You Arrive

Getting to Chicago from O’Hare Airport

  • Plan to go directly to your dorm once you arrive in Chicago.
  • The University of Chicago recommends the following methods for travelling from O’Hare International Airport to the City of Chicago:
    • Taxi: approximately $60; 30-60 minutes depending on traffic.
    • Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): approximately $40; 30-60 minutes.
    • Go Airport Express Shuttle: approximately $40; 30-60 minutes.
  • It is customary to tip drivers 10% of the total fare.

Getting to your Dorm

  • “The Flats” is located at 829 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605.
  • Building staff can be reached at 312-939-0112.
  • You will be able to pick up your room key from building staff upon arrival and check-in at the building.

Move-In Day – Sunday, September 17th

  • Check in with building staff once you arrive in the lobby of “The Flats” to receive your room key.
  • Your Resident Assistant, Elizabeth “Beth” Neiman, will be living in the building with you and can be reached at neimaner@uchicago.edu.
  • You should plan to stop by Beth’s room when you arrive. Her room will be stocked with snacks and refreshments for you to enjoy as you get settled into your new residence.
  • After Beth has welcomed you and your classmates to Chicago, you will take a walk around your neighborhood to get acquainted with your new surroundings.
  • You will end the night with a welcome dinner in Beth’s apartment.

Orientation and First Week

Rockefeller Chapel

  • Campus orientation will be held on Monday, September 18th, from 9 AM – 5 PM.
  • Meet in the lobby of your apartment building at 8 AM on Monday morning; you will be taking the Metra commuter rail to Hyde Park with your resident assistant.
  • Orientation will take place at the Graham School, at 1427 E 60th St; please bring your laptop to orientation.  
  • At orientation, students will receive:
    • UChicago student identification card (UCID)
    • CTA pass
    • Campus map
    • Class schedules
  • Submit an online check-in form with the Office of International Affairs (OIA) within 3 business days of arriving in Chicago.
  • Complete mandatory online international student orientation. 
  • Check your mailbox and my.uchicago.edu account for messages.
  • Update your U.S. address in my.uchicago.edu within the first week.
