Memoir Writing: Exploring the Genre

Course Description: 

This course is designed for individuals who want to explore the art and craft of memoir. Over the course of eight weeks, participants will focus on the development of voice, structure, scene-making and additional elements of compelling memoir. Participants will partake in exercises to help generate material and begin essay-length memoirs. Through the writing process, students will explore their experiences to discover and share their universal truths. This course includes a workshop element; writing generated in the course will be workshopped by fellow students.

Instructor: 

This course is taught by Dina Elenbogen, an instructor at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. Elenbogen is author of the poetry collections, Apples of the Earth, and Shore and the memoir, Drawn from Water. The recipient of fellowships from the Illinois Arts Council and the Ragdale Foundation, her work has appeared in anthologies and magazines including Fury, City of the Big Shoulders, Beyond Lament, Lit Hub, Bellevue Literary Review, Brevity, Prairie Schooner, Woven Tale Press, Patterson Literary Review, Connecticut River Review, New City Chicago, and other venues.

Notes: This course takes place via Zoom and leverages the Canvas platform for materials and occasional class discussion.
