Graduate Student-at-Large and Returning Scholar
Through the Graduate Student-at-Large (GSAL) and Returning Scholar (RS) programs, you can take courses throughout the University of Chicago and become part of the university community, without becoming part of a degree program. Choose from hundreds of courses in over 75 academic programs. Register for either graduate or undergraduate level classes throughout the University of Chicago, from literature to statistics and from business to film to chemistry. Plus, you’ll get to know University of Chicago professors and experience what it means to be a student here. Explore the academic and professional course possibilities that the University of Chicago offers—they’re virtually endless.
GSAL Students take courses for a grade and credit. Taking courses as a GSAL student is an ideal way to define your academic focus, test out graduate school, and build a transferable record of study.
Returning Scholars audit courses and do not receive grades. This program is a wonderful way to tap into the University of Chicago’s knowledge base in order to stay abreast of developments in your field, branch out into new areas, or simply to learn for the love of learning.
