The Graham School honors its degree and certificate candidates in a school-wide ceremony. At the ceremony, candidates march in a formal academic procession into International House’s historic Assembly Hall. They are then photographed as each is formally awarded a degree or certificate. Afterwards, the celebration continues at a reception for the new graduates and their guests.

When should I arrive?

Arrive at 11:00 am to receive instructions, visit with instructors, and line up for the processional. The ceremony will begin at 12:00 pm. No one arriving after 11:45 am time will be permitted to march.

Who is eligible to participate?

Degree students who completed their program in the spring quarter. Certificate students who completed their program this academic year. By completed, candidates must have fulfilled all curricular requirements, including having received passing grades for graded courses, and passed, when applicable, all prescribed examinations by the deadlines listed below:

  • Certificate programs in which students do not receive grades—June 13
  • Certificate programs in which students do receive grades—June 1
  • Degree programs—June 1

How do I check my program’s requirements?

Consult your program’s web pages or contact your program director.

What is appropriate attire?

Convocation is a formal and traditional ceremony. We ask that candidates wear attire and adornment that is appropriate for the occasion. Degree recipients should plan on wearing the robes worn at the University’s morning ceremony.

Can I bring guests?

Absolutely! We welcome friends and family. If you haven’t already, you can let us know how many guests will be attending when you RSVP.

How do I order the photographs?

We will photograph candidates receiving their diplomas. Approximately two weeks after the ceremony, graduates will receive information by mail. There is no obligation to purchase.

Do you need accommodations?

Candidates with disabilities who need accommodations and candidates who need arrangements for religious or cultural reasons should contact Vanessa Georg at vgeorg@uchicago.edu or 773.834.0159 before May 17. For candidates with limited mobility, we do not supply wheelchairs.

When should I arrive?

We’ll start seating guests in the Assembly Hall at 10:00 am. Be sure to arrive no later than 11:45 am as the procession will begin shortly after.

Are there seating reservations?

We seat guests on a first come, first serve basis. While there are not tickets, you need to check in at our sign-in desk once you arrive.

Do you need accommodations?

Guests with disabilities who need accommodations and candidates who need arrangements for religious or cultural reasons should contact Vanessa Georg at vgeorg@uchicago.edu or 773.834.0159 before May 17. For guests with limited mobility, we do not supply wheelchairs. We can, however, offer reserved seating closest to the Handicap entrance.
